With the help of a local photographer, I managed to visit some abandoned places in Detroit. When almost one-third of the inhabitants moved out of the city, a lot of buildings were simply abandoned. Scrappers, homeless and bored youth tore the abandoned buildings apart and sprayed them with grafity. Some of the old buildings will be restored and have a second life. However, most of them will be demolished or neglected. The sheer size of the Detroit city area is huge. We were driving for miles and miles through wasteland. The furthest point was the former AMC car factory, about 11 km from downtown Detroit. This huge facility is a good reference for the scale of the destruction.
